This is for the purpose of having a second copy for yourself for convenience in using multiple systems and as a backup in case the original becomes unusable. For the copy to be considered legal and valid, you must be in possession of the original copy.
There are many reasons why people might choose to download music illegally, and some of them are actually quite valid. The record companies can be greedy, sometimes overcharging in order to make the most profit. Young children and teenagers who have access to computers may not be able to afford to buy all of the albums they want, and thus choose to download music illegally. Since the songs appear instantly on the computer screen and may claim to be "free", it does not seem like stealing. A child that would never dream of taking a CD from a store may not even think twice about downloading them off the Internet.
Another reason why some people might download music illegally is because they might not find the selection they are looking for in a legal marketplace. Some artists only allow entire albums to be purchased, rather than single tracks. Some artists have personal reasons why they do not allow any of their music at all to be sold over the Internet. These can be very frustrating to users who would otherwise purchase and download music legally. In any case, know that the consequences of downloading a single song could potentially mean a big lawsuit, and think before you download music illegally.
